How Can I Start An Online Business When I Don't Know Where to Start?

The foundation stone of planning a successful online business is basically the same as that of any other business...

Start with what you know.

As an online business consultant, the question I am most frequently asked is: "I would really like to start my own business on the Internet, but I don't know what kind of business I should start."

The short answer is -- Start with what you know and what you care about.

Here are three good reasons why:

Reason #1
By using the knowledge and experience you already have, you can spend most of your time on building your business, rather than having to learn about a new product or service.

Reason #2
Starting and running a business means long hours and some sacrifice. It is much easier and more enjoyable to work when you are doing something you enjoy. (If you aren't going to enjoy it, why do it?) If your only purpose in running your business is to make money, and you have no passion for your product or concern for your customers, it will show in your presentation. Your potential customers will not be impressed. In fact they will probably not ever become anything more than just potential customers.

Reason #3
Selling is intimidating to most people. It has a connotation of coercing someone to part with their money for something they really don't need. But anyone can share a great find with their friends! If you believe in your product or service, others will believe in it as well.

Do you think you don't have any knowledge or experience on which to base your business?
Try "Mind Mapping":

Get paper and pencil and sit down in a peaceful spot. Write down your interests, putting each one in the center of its own sheet of paper. Do the same for your life experiences.

Don't just write your resume, but examine every area of your life. Have you been a parent? What challenges and tests have you faced in life? What kinds of hobbies and jobs have you learned? What knowledge and skills have you gained from doing so? Arrange each tidbit of information around the central theme, creating a web of ideas.

You may need to put your writing aside for a while, and allow your subconscious mind to work on it. When you come back to it, look at it from the standpoint of some other person who is looking for information. In which areas can you meet their need?

The number one product being sold in the world today, and especially online, is just that: Information. Even if you have a great product or service to offer, that is not what you are really selling (If you are selling successfully). What you are selling is information: "What will this product do to improve my life?" "How will this service help me?"

The Internet provides everything you need to package your information attractively and distribute it to the people who need it, and at little or low cost. There are even people out there just waiting to advise and help you. (Like me!)

The only way to really fail is never to start! Get that paper and pencil (or mouse and text editor) and get started now.
