How to Set Goals for Yourself and Your Business
Look at yourself and your goals. The first steps you must take to accomplish what you want to do in life are to know what you want, set goals for yourself, and then take control and make your goals happen.
For some people, starting a home business is a way they can attain their ultimate goals. But starting and operating a successful business requires setting many smaller goals as well.
One of the biggest reasons why people fail is not because they plan to fail but because they fail to plan!
Make a plan for your business so you know how to get from where you are now to where you want to be in the future.
What do you want?
- more time with your family and to do the things you enjoy?
- money to buy what you and your family need?
- more control over your life?
- more independence and flexibility in your life?
- to take on a new challenge and succeed?
- pride of accomplishment?
When you have set objectives and goals for yourself, it becomes clear what you need to do, and you can get it done!
Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- What do I want to do? What is most important to me in my life?
- If I could change anything about my life and work, what would it be?
Imagine yourself having achieved your goal: what will you do with your extra time and money?
- When Do I Want To Achieve My Goal?
Set some deadlines for yourself. Make them challenging, but be sure that you can actually meet them. Be very specific about what you expect to accomplish by that time. State actual dollar amounts, dates, etc. Write down your goals and deadlines and post them where you can see them regularly. Check yourself out on them every few months, and make the necessary adjustments, either to what you are doing or to the goals themselves.
- What is My Strategy For Achieving My Goal?
Now that you know what you're working toward, break it into simple steps. Think about what resources, knowledge, and help you may need to accomplish them.
Long Term Goals: 10-year, 5-year and 1-year goals
Short Term Goals: goals for the next 9 months, 6 months and 3 months
Immediate Goals: 1-30 days from now
Try to anticipate problems and obstacles and develop plans for dealing with them. Make your plan flexible, things don't always go as planned.
- When I Accomplish A Goal, How Will I Reward Myself?
People who are the entrepreneurial type often have trouble stopping their work to enjoy the fruits of their labor! If you don't reward yourself - what are you working for? Give yourself some incentive! You'll find that you'll work better and be happier.
The key to getting what you want in any area of your life is to set a goal and aim for it.
What you should do now depends on whether you have come to a conclusion about what business you want to begin.
